There… there is… nothing… (826 words)

The sky: clear as glass. The ground: dry as ash. This combo of sameness stretches indefinitely, with no end in sight. It's all just the sun high above and the cracked terrain beneath one's soles.
That's it. There is nothing else here. Just this infinite sea of cracked stone, baked dry by an eternal daylight sky.
There are no hills. There are no rivers. There are no seas. There are no valleys. There are no buildings. There are no forests. There are no fields.

As you enter this place for the first time, all you see is the sprawling flat level with nothing around. But that's not a problem at all, you think to yourself.
After all, there were many ways to traverse the Backrooms. Maybe find a way out? Maybe find a new home? Or, perhaps, a way back to the Earth you accidentally left behind all that time ago?

After taking in your surroundings, there's only one choice to make…

And so, despite the absence of anything besides deserted ground and a harsh sun, you walk onwards, determined to survive or escape.

Supplies may be low, but what else can you do besides lie down and slowly die? No, that would be wasteful. You must carry on.

Your footsteps emanate a sound audible to just you, as your shoes stride upon the rough, rocky, and deserted terrain. And they're all you can hear. No wind, no insects, no birds, just this same familiar sound.

You walk… and you walk… and you walk… and you walk… and you walk some more… further and further… your legs using up more and more precious energy with each passing stride.

It wasn't long until your thoughts takeover, desperate for salvation just as much as you are. Why is there nothing here?! Where is the exit?! How do I get out?! But no matter how far you walked, how long you took, the dull surroundings remain the same. It's all dried earth… nothing else…

Then disaster struck.

After days of nonstop walking, exposed to the harsh sun, your body gives up.

Unable to walk another step further, your legs give way, and you collapse onto the solid ground.

Mustering up your remaining energy, you crawl along the ground, but it doesn't take long for your arms to weaken in the same vein as your legs.

Your limbs have been rendered useless. Your stomach: craving sustenance. Your throat: dried from dehydration. Your skin: roasted red by the hot ball of plasma that is the sun.

What you've done was powerless. You have accomplished nothing. And now your body is on the receiving end of your terrible choices. Choices that can't be changed. That grand timber door in the cave was a trap. A lure that dragged you inside, only to be a false promise into slow, excruciating suffering.

There's only one thing you can do now.
It's time to accept fate.
it's a dead end.
