Item #: SCP-9261
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures
SCP-9261 is kept in a 30 m tall cylindrical concrete room with a radius of 10 m at Area-33. In the event of a security breach (see Addendum 1), the floor of the room is to be able to be dropped up to 10m, giving the room a maximum height of 40 m total. The entrance to the room is to be maintained at the floor height at all times. The room containing the anomaly is to be preceded by a large airlock chamber. A one-way ventilation system at the top of the room capable of moving 12 m3/h out of the chamber is to be operational at all times. No oxygen may be present in the room. The room is to be maintained at a constant pressure of 1.25 atm.
Illumination of the room is to be conducted by green single-spectrum LED light bulbs emitting a wavelength of 500 to 575 nm placed at regular 2.5 m intervals flush with the wall of the room. No other light sources should enter the room at any time. SCP-9261 is to be suspended with steel cables 5 m off of the ground for easier access. Modifications to the lighting, oxygen levels, other gas levels, internal pressure, ventilation, humidity, or any other containment procedures may only be conducted with the express, written approval of a Staff Member with Level 4 Security Clearance or higher.
The room is to be monitored by CCTV at all times. Autonomous Drones equipped with axes and chainsaws are to remain in the room at all times to remove all excess growths from the instance. The room is to be fitted to allow material extracted from SCP-9261 to exit the room through the airlock and be decontaminated.
No other living organism is allowed inside the chamber without a CBRN protective ensemble including a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
Any deviations from the expected behaviour as outlined in the "Description" section should be reported immediately to the Site Director.
Description
SCP-92561 is an ombu bush1 of the species Phytolacca dioica 23 m in height, with a canopy roughly 16 m in diameter and a trunk 8.5 m in diameter at its widest point, and weighing 100 tons. The specimen was recovered on April 11, 1998 from unincorporated territory in the Municipality of General Enrique Martínez, Treinta y Tres Department, Uruguay when a local farmer attempted to chop it down while clearing the area to build a house. The Foundation became alerted of the instance after a call by the farmer to the local Intendant's office requesting permission to use explosives to remove it. After removing the subject from the site and interviewing the farmer about the encounter, Class B Amnestics were administered to purge all knowledge about the object and related events from the farmer. Government files regarding the request to use explosives were also removed.
The tree, except for its roots, is invincible to all forms of damage including fire, blunt force, cutting, sawing, shooting with an M1-Abrahams tank, wind speeds of 5000km/h for week-long periods (no wilting observed), conventional explosives with a yield of up to 500 tons of TNT and nuclear explosives with a yield of up to 750 tons of TNT. All artillery rounds bounce off of the specimen.
The roots cannot be harmed by anything except tools commonly used for cutting wood or woodworking, such as, axes, chainsaws, chisels, hand planes, wood chippers, routers, sanders, hand saws, table saws and miter saws. After being separated from the main body, the wooden material the roots are made out of exhibits the same characteristics as the rest of the roots but lose weight drastically with a density drop from 270 kg/m3 to 43 kg/m3. This characteristic has made the wood especially useful in construction and fireproofing of wooden structures within the Foundation.
When cut, the roots release a toxic gas that, when inhaled, can cause symptoms ranging from indigestion and vomiting to acute and chronic dehydration and death, depending on level of exposure. This gas, however, can be safely released into the atmosphere, causing no harm to either the environment or humans, and dissipates quickly.
Under regular circumstances, the roots grow at a rate of 12.4 m3/min and do not stop when faced with any barrier, digging their way through all known materials. However, testing has shown that growth speed can be reduced 45% to approximately 6.8 m3/min by depriving the specimen of all oxygen and eliminating natural light, replacing it with green single-spectrum LED lights. It is currently unknown why the object did not expand its roots to dangerous proportions in its original location, but it has been theorised that termite colonies (or other insects), kept the growth at bay.
The rate at which SCP-9261 grows its roots has made it useful for the Foundation to harvest its wood and use it for construction and other wood-related products, especially considering that the pruning is necessary as per the SCP, which avoids structural damage to the entire globe.
SCP-9261 is unable to reproduce as it does not produce seeds produces exactly one seed every 19 years, which, when germinated, does not grow. The seeds are just as indestructible as the trunk and canopy and have been classified SCP-9261-1 and SCP-9261-2 (only two have been produced since the specimen came into Foundation custody, the numbering convention should be followed for every subsequent seed).
Internal imaging of the trunk has revealed that there is a "core" present in its centre which changes shape every time it is observed. The nature of the wood makes direct examination of the core impossible. However, some recognisable shapes have been observed. The core has been classed as SCP-9261-α for the time being. This is subject to change (see Addendum 2). The imaging has also suggested with a high degree of certainty that SCP-9261-α is made of water with a relatively high concentration of Fe+2 ions. SCP-9261-α has been observed to take the form of small animals (including some not native to the region), animal organs, plant organs, Platonic solids, abstract shapes, and (only immediately after use), scaled down versions of whatever weapon attempted to penetrate it. The percentages of each can be seen in the following table.
Although the colour of the subject is no different to that of a non-anomalous individual of the species P. dioica, when the cut roots are placed in any liquid except for water, they display the characteristic blue glow of Cherenkov radiation. However, testing reveals little to no presence of radioactive materials, leading to the conclusion that the phenomenon is either not Cherenkov radiation, or is being produced by an unknown subatomic particle that cannot be detected with existing technology.
Radiocarbon dating has shown the entity to be between 13000 and 13500 years old.

Re: SCP-9261 theoretical Security BreachesGood morning Director,
I am messaging you to set a date for a meeting so we can discuss SCP-9261's difficult-to-contain nature and any security breaches that may stem from it. At present, the use of SCP-9261 to extract wood is, although both necessary to prevent a security breach, and helpful to the Foundation, allowing it to use the wood for its own ends and sell the pulp produced from it for profit, unsustainable. The 20 Autonomous Drones operating are barely keeping up with the anomalous growth of the entity.
As well as this, moving the cut wood out of the chamber SCP-9261 is housed in, especially considering the requirement of decontaminating it by allowing the fumes to escape first fully, is not possible in the event that the airlock, ventilation systems, conveyor belts, or any other part involved in the process should require maintenance.
SCP-9261 has also shown adaptability to harsh environments and resistance to all forms of damage as noted in its file. I am concerned that, should, for any reason, the processing of its wood stop, it will break out of the encasing chamber and cause structural damage to the Area-33 facility in the best case, or root itself all the way down to the mantle and cause structural damage to the planet (unlikely, but possible if we either fail to respond quickly enough or it majorly increases its growth rate). We should also remember that storage space for the wood is limited and that its production is unlimited.
To address these concerns, I would like to explore with you in said meeting the possibility of requisitioning Class-D personnel to have on standby to take over should any of the systems fail (for example to carry the wood or chop it up). I would also like to take this time to remind you that, with current growth rates of 6.8 m3/min, the roots will meet the extension of the floor in less than two minutes and break through (I understand the inviability of extending it as we have discussed in previous meetings).
I hope to receive a timely response.
Cordially,
Dr. ███████
To all SCP-9261 research team personnel, it has recently come to my attention that, due to the new findings using recently acquired imaging technology regarding the nature of SCP-9261-α being made of water with a high concentration of Fe+2 ions, some investigators on this team wish to drop the designation from the core. This is particularly concerning the fact that the nature of this part of the entity is no longer anomalous, and what is anomalous is the wood structure around the "core" changing shape. A meeting will be conducted at 1400 tomorrow, September 3, in meeting room 3, to which all members of the research team are required to come, to discuss the development and the possibility of dropping the designation.
Signed, Dr. ███████, Lead researcher — SCP-9261
September 3 meeting notes: No change has been agreed upon, current designation will remain until further notice.

Foundation Interviewer: Good day sir, may I ask your name?
Farmer: █████ ██████2, who are you?
Foundation Interviewer: Very well, Mr. ██████, I am from the Intendant's office, I have been told you filed a request for the use of explosives for land-clearing?
Farmer: Yes, I have this Ombú which will not be cut, no matter what I try.
Foundation Interviewer: Have you tried uprooting it?
Farmer: Yes, but as you probably already know, its roots are too extensive to remove without heavy machinery.
Foundation Interviewer: I see, tell me, Mr. ██████, have you been experiencing any uneasiness since you found it, hallucinations, indigestion?
The farmer looks puzzled at the question and pauses for a second
Farmer: Yes, now that you mention it, I have been suffering from a bit of indigestion recently.
Foundation Interviewer: Mr. ██████, it seems that you have come across a particularly rare subspecies of Ombú we had previously thought extinct3. We at the Intendant's office would be happy to remove it for you for a small fee.
Farmer: Sure.
Foundation Interviewer: Great, I'll have my team in later today. Have a good day, Mr. ██████.
Farmer: Have a good day.
Foundation personnel came in the afternoon and managed to uproot the tree, and transport it to Area-33. Unfortunately, the Farmer suspected something was off forcing Class B Amnestics to be administered. No fee was ever levied.
