Special Containment Procedures
:SCP-9297 must be housed within a sealed containment chamber measuring 7 m × 7 m.
No personnel are permitted to enter the 4-metre radius surrounding SCP-9297 without authorisation.
Unauthorised entry into the 4-metre radius surrounding SCP-9297 will result in the individual being subjected to a psychological and psychiatric assessment, followed by disciplinary action, transfer from their post, or other measures depending on the severity of the offence.
All routine inspections must be conducted via remote equipment, and any experiments involving SCP-9297 must be approved in advance by the Project Director.
Description
SCP-9297 is an unremarkable black notebook. No recognisable text, symbols or other distinctive features have been found on its cover. Its manufacturer, date of manufacture and original purpose remain unknown.
When any individual enters a 4-metre radius of SCP-9297, they will gradually experience a strong and irresistible urge to pick up and open SCP-9297. This effect is unaffected by the subject’s subjective will, prior warning, or knowledge of the object’s anomalous nature. Once a subject opens the notebook and views its contents, one of the following two outcomes will occur.
The first outcome manifests as the subject’s rapid death following observation of the notebook’s contents. Following death, the subject’s corpse will vanish completely within a short period of time. No physical mechanism has yet been identified that could explain the process of the corpse’s disappearance.
The second outcome is characterised by the subject suddenly collapsing to their knees and exhibiting symptoms such as bleeding from the mouth, nose, eyes and ear canals. The subject typically displays signs of severe distress and dies within approximately two minutes. Unlike in the first scenario, the corpses of such subjects do not vanish.
Post-mortem examinations of victims in the second scenario reveal severe blunt force trauma to the chest. Some of the injuries are consistent with having sustained a powerful external impact whilst alive; however, there is usually no source of force at the scene that could account for the trauma.
Experimental records to date indicate that the first outcome typically occurs in subjects with no known criminal record, whilst the second outcome occurs primarily in subjects with a history of violent crime, particularly those who have previously injured or killed others. However, the current sample size is insufficient to confirm whether a criminal record is a direct determinant of the outcome of death, nor can it rule out other, as yet unidentified, determining factors.
SCP-9297 was initially discovered within a court in a US state. At the time, the item was in the possession of a judge presiding over a hearing and was being used as an ordinary notebook.
Towards the end of the hearing, the judge opened SCP-9297. Immediately afterwards, he collapsed to his knees and began to exhibit severe haemorrhaging from multiple parts of his body. Despite the prompt administration of first aid by those present, the judge died approximately two minutes later.
The incident caused chaos within the courtroom. Law enforcement officers at the scene subsequently brought the situation under control and requested assistance from the relevant authorities. Upon learning of the incident, the Foundation intervened to investigate, ultimately recovering SCP-9297 and subjecting relevant witnesses to memory erasure.
Subsequent investigations of the incident site and the deceased’s remains confirmed that the incident was consistent with SCP-9297’s second known anomalous effect. The object was subsequently transferred to a Foundation facility for further study.
